Branches of Love Boxed Set, Books 4-6 by Sally Britton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am completely won over with this author\’s writing style. Her characters are very real with all their skills, personality traits & flaws. I thought \’The Earl & His Lady\’ (Book 4) would be my most favourite book until I read \’Courting the Vicar\’s Daughter\’ (Book 6). Harry Devon & Daisy are the sweetest & most vibrant couple in this series. Of course, their story begins almost ten years after the first book, so I am impressed the author has put in a lot of thought into how people\’s notions progress over time. This is the true spirit of character development & plot variety that most authors fail to incorporate in their work.
Virginia & Lucas were the first to convert me into a dedicated reader for this series. Although the story emphasises the stark injustice of the time period, where a widow has no right to property or assets or even her own children (and must remarry to live a normal life), the author handles the plot so beautifully that the reader is routing for Virginia\’s happiness in her newly married life, even for the sake of her two children as well.
Rebecca Devon in the Book 5, Miss Devon\’s Choice, was slightly disappointing for me. She seemed to behave out of character most of the times. The author justifies this in the second half of the book when her fiance Christian realises that she is desperately searching for love in an arranged marriage. I could understand that part because I am from India where arranged marriages are still the norm for 80-90% of the population. However, I think I would have liked the story better if Rebecca had stood up for herself a bit more.
Harry & Daisy in Book 6 are exceptionally wonderful. Both are smart & opinionated at the same time. Their chemistry is deliciously captivating. Being young, they are also prone to misunderstandings at every turn. But Harry is a true gentleman in every sense of the word. I am so glad I read this book. It renews my faith in good writing & enchanting romance.
If I had to nit-pick, I would say that the pace is a little slow at times in all three books. But the plot, characters & ending make up for it brilliantly. I am looking forward to reading all of the books by this author.
If you love historical romance, with a need for true human characters in any era, then this series is perfect for you.
